12hour Shifts 0700 - 1900

 

Job Summary 

The Laboratory Aide assumes responsibility for the performance, with good coordination, of phlebotomy and related duties of phlebotomy. Orientates and attends in-services to maintain uniform quality within the department. 

Essential Functions

  • Verifies patient’s identity per guidelines.
  • Complies with policies and procedures when performing venipuncture.
  • Uses collection tube and supplies, as appropriate, for specific test.
  • Performs quality phlebotomy techniques.
  • Properly I.D.s patients to be drawn. Follows Joint Commission National Patient safety goals standards Properly labels all tubes drawn.
  • Uses appropriate area for venipuncture /capillary collection.
  • Knows correct specimen requirements.
  • Maintains skills in entering and retrieval of data from order entry system
  • Maintains skills in operating and troubleshooting laboratory computers
  • Receives specimens accurately.
  • Produces collections lists as scheduled.
  • Produces and resolves collection pending report. Resolves discrepancies on a timely basis.
  • Knows and is able to implement down-time procedures.
  • Identifies reference lab tests and access reference lab system efficiently and inputs requests and retrieve results.
  • Follows HIPAA guidelines.
  • Applies correct guidelines for disposal and maintenance of lab supplies.
  • Demonstrates essential telephone courtesy behaviors. Uses appropriate etiquette when receiving, placing and transferring phone calls.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Technical School Completion of certified phlebotomy program preferred
  • 2-4 years hospital experience preferred
  • 0-1 years Experience with laboratory information systems preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to make quick decisions and work independently.
  • Good interpersonal skills a must.
  • Knowledge of the various clinical normal ranges for all age groups required.
  • Must possess ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
  • Must be able to follow directions and to perform work according to department standards when no directions are given.
  • Requires good interpersonal skills.
  • Must have good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to function effectively in fast-paced environment with multiple demands/deadlines.
  • Position requires some overtime and ability to coordinate several activities simultaneously.
  • Must be emotionally mature and able to function effectively under stress.
  • Must be able to read, write, and follow instructions and document care given in English.
  • Ability to plan and organize.

Licenses and Certifications

  • AMT certificate or Phlebotomy certificate from accredited institution preferred
