Job Description

Job Summary 

The Mental Health Worker II provides direct and supportive care to patients with behavioral health needs under the supervision of licensed clinical staff. This role assists with activities of daily living, monitors patient behavior and safety, and supports therapeutic interventions. The Mental Health Worker II plays an essential role in promoting a safe, structured environment and contributes to the interdisciplinary care team in delivering high-quality behavioral health services. 

Essential Functions

  • Provides care and assistance with activities of daily living for assigned patients, including hygiene, toileting, mobility, and nutritional support.
  • Observes and documents patient behaviors, mood changes, and interactions; reports relevant findings promptly to nursing staff.
  • Responds to patient and family requests in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Assists in monitoring patient safety, including implementation of observation levels and safety checks according to policy.
  • Supports the nursing team in carrying out therapeutic interventions, including de-escalation techniques and crisis response protocols.
  • Participates in verbal and physical de-escalation when appropriate and safely performs crisis intervention and restraint procedures following established guidelines.
  • Maintains a clean, organized patient care environment and ensures necessary supplies and equipment are readily available.
  • Assists with patient transport and maintains appropriate documentation of observations and activities.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new staff and students; may serve as a preceptor as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of experience as a patient care assistant in a mental health setting required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of behavioral health principles, crisis intervention techniques, and de-escalation strategies.
  • Ability to maintain therapeutic boundaries and respond appropriately in high-stress situations.
  • Strong observational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Physically able to assist in crisis intervention, including restraining patients as needed.
  • Demonstrates compassion, patience, and professionalism in all interactions.

Licenses and Certifications

  • BCLS - Basic Life Support required
