Job Description

Evaluates perioperative patients and plans, implements and documents surgical nursing care. Performs surgical procedures under supervision of a surgeon. Functions in a scrub and circulating nurse role. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Requires an associate's degree, certification as a registered nurse first assistant (CRNFA), certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR), and at least 2 years of operating room experience. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.

What Does an {C} Do?: As an CRNFA with Lower Keys Medical Center, you will spend your day…

  • Maintaining a culture of safety using safety tools consistently
  • Using surgical count adjuncts and following count policies
  • Functioning not only as an CRNFA, but also as a circulator and scrub as needed
  • Maintaining a sterile conscience
  • Using multiple pieces of OR equipment and Surgical instruments according to the manufacturer’s instructions for use
  • Knowing sterility requirements and using resources for all equipment and supplies
  • Participating in all phases of the Safe Procedure Review
  • Functioning in the advanced role as an educator and clinical specialist in the perioperative setting
  • Practicing as a first assist under the direct supervision of the surgeon/LIP using a unique set of surgical skills, i.e. suturing, retracting, and other skills per credentialing
  • Assisting in the set-up of the OR room verifying all needed supplies and equipment are in the room and functioning properly
  • Assisting with the proper positioning, prepping and draping of the patient per the surgeon/LIP preferences

Which Qualifications Do You Need?: In order to set you up for success, you need the basics of…

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse
  • Certified in Perioperative Nursing
  • Holding a certificate from and successfully completed a recognized program (A recognized program addresses all content of the Association of Operating Room Nurses, Inc. Core curriculum for the registered nurse first assistant and includes one academic year, defined as 45 hours of didactic instruction and 120 hours of clinical internship, or its equivalent of two college semesters.  
  • Current CRNFA certification,
  • Current BLS
  • Current ACLS and PALS or NRP or obtained within 6 months of hire
  • Being credentialed by through the Medical Staffing Department for appointment, reappointment and for granting, renewing and revising your clinical privileges
  • Adherence to The Florida Nurse Practice Act and the Scope of Nursing
