Job Description

Carries out physician orders to ensure patient care is complete. Organizes the hospitalists work load for physicians and mid-levels by assigning admissions, doing pre-rounds with report to doctors on current patient status, documents as directed and within scope/responsibilities of practice. Does assessment on all new admissions to the Hospitalist service with collaborative agreement with charge nurses on patient plan of care. Records the history for the hospitalists. Keeps nursing and doctors informed of treatment plans and activities that centered on the patient. Trouble shoots when problems occur for the doctors, patients, families, and team members.

Assists in discharge planning including collation of medications, needed equipment and special needs. Assists the providers with CPOE questions and provides ongoing training and assistance when they encounter difficulty or new updates have occurred.

 

Education:

Completion of a college or hospital based school of nursing as evidenced by licensure in the State of Texas by BNE or compact agreement.

 

Licenses/Certifications:

Current Texas Licensure to practice professional nursing.

Current BLS certification

 

Experience:

Med/Surg or ICU experience preferred.

Knowledgeable in basic nursing skills.

Proficient in drug types, interactions and reference materials.  Knows the resource applications on Intranet for personal and provider use.

Knowledgeable to give medications and perform duties of a RN.

Specific knowledge of medical terminology to be able to understand and carry out physician orders.

Specific knowledge of the basic principles of the nursing field and their applications to be able to understand and carry out the duties of a staff nurse.

General knowledge of arithmetic, spelling, and grammar to be able to do drug calculations and properly document patient care.

Specific knowledge of nursing principles and patient care procedures in order to communicate properly with patients, staff, and physicians. 

General knowledge assures physician orders are carried out effectively.

CPOE knowledge and ability to educate hospitalists.
