Job Description

Cook, Fort Wayne, Indiana

Schedule:  Full-time, 80 hours per pay period, 40 hours per week, 2nd Shift

Sign-On Bonus Eligible up to $7,500

Under the immediate direction of the Nutritional Services Specialist and/or Group Leader, performs a variety of patient room service, dining room service, dish washing, and other related tasks.  The Cook prepares foods for patient/team member meal trays, takes patient/team member room service phone calls, delivers meal trays to patient rooms/staff lounges, prepares and serves food items in the cafeteria, maintains cleanliness in storeroom and  kitchen areas, and works in the dish room cleaning, sanitizing and putting dishes away.  Is responsible for following HACCP guidelines regarding food preparation, infection control and storage.  Works with high temperature equipment including ovens, steamers, fryers, grill top and open flame burners.

Minimal Acceptable Job Qualifications

Licensure:       ServSafe certified within 90 days of hire

Experience:    Previous experience in institutional or restaurant food service with training in the preparation of food, service of food, and in principles of sanitation and safe food handling and equipment is required.

Education:      Minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent.  Basic understanding of food/sanitation.


  1. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  2. Must be able to read, speak, and write English
  3. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds, and push/pull wheeled carts up to 100 pounds.
  4. Must possess excellent interpersonal, communication skills.
  5. Position requires constant contact with cleaning chemicals, sharp utensils, heat/steam, hot grease, wet floors.
  6. Must be able to work in congested areas where quick pace is expected.
  7. Must be willing to accept additional job responsibility as needed.
  8. Must demonstrate proper body mechanics to ensure safety.

Assists diet office team with maintaining accurate patient census, modifying as necessary for diet changes as dictated by the Registered Dietitian recommendations and/or physician’s diet order.  Also performs other duties as assigned.
