Overview
The Diabetes Educator works with individuals, families, groups, and communities to educate and treat patients/clients diagnosed with diabetes while ensuring that the AADE Standards of Care are met. The Diabetes Educator incorporates current knowledge into the education and treatment of diabetic patients. Diabetes Educators function within the hospital system providing, coordinating, and collaborating on the care of acute inpatients and outpatients. Assesses, plans intervenes, and evaluates basic diabetes nursing practices which promote health, assist patients/clients in implementing a diabetes care treatment plan and prevent long-term complications and co-morbidities. Assists patients/clients in self-management strategies and in coping with the psychosocial impact of a chronic illness. Participates in the identification of new or at-risk individuals in the community and in health promotion education/activities which reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Actively participates in the continuing education of other nurses who may care for diabetic patients.
