Job Description

Evaluates assigned patients and plans, implements and documents nursing care. Assists physicians during examinations and procedures. Performs various patient tests and administers medications within the scope of practice of the registered nurse. Promotes patients' independence by establishing patient care goals and teaching patients and families to understand conditions, medications, and self-care skills. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. To provide safe and effective patient care before, during and after the invasive diagnostic or interventional procedure according to the Tennova Healthcare Cleveland -Medical Center nursing and imaging practice procedures.  To assist a physician performing a procedure by preparing the patient for procedures such as (but limited to) Cardiac Catheterizations, Cardiac Device Implants, Percutaneous Coronary Interventions, Special Radiographic procedures, and any other procedures performed in the Cardiac Cath Lab or Specials Lab.  In order to prepare patients the Short Stay RN will teach patients about the procedure and answer questions. Provide booklets, videos, or other educational tools to reinforce learning. Assess for allergies, especially significant allergies such as a previous anaphylactic reaction to one or more allergens, including contrast media. The cardiologist will discuss benefits and risks, such as dysrhythmias, bleeding, stroke, or MI. Make sure the patient has provided informed consent.

Further, the RN cares for patients post procedure and assesses for nausea or pain and provides medication as indicated. Assess the catheter insertion site for bleeding or hematoma with vital signs as ordered. Provide education post-op care. Review the discharge orders with the patient and family, including activity restrictions, and educate them about signs and symptoms of complications, including MI, stroke, and insertion-site bleeding or infection. 



Must be a graduate of an approved school of nursing as evidenced by verification of state licensure.


Minimum of one (1) year critical care or emergency room clinical experience.   Some exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Cardiac Services Director. 


Current Tennessee or Compact State registered nurse license required.   BLS and ACLS certification required.  If not ACLS certified on hire, must acquire it within 6 months.
