Job Description

Compounds and dispenses prescribed drugs in a healthcare facility environment. Responsible for transferring prescriptions, handling incoming physician calls, logging data into the computer, and Drug Utilization Review. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a manager. Requires a bachelor's degree and/or an advanced degree in pharmacy and is licensed to practice. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Requires appropriate license for practicing state. Must be or be willing to relocate to within a 30 minute radius of work site.


The Staff Pharmacist functions as a direct Supervisor over support personnel on their shift and serves as a liaison between the Pharmacy and the departments served by the Pharmacy.  Primary responsibilities include medication order processing, medication dispensing, monitoring appropriateness of medication therapy, MAR accuracy, medication storage and adequacy, training support personnel and newly hired pharmacists, patient teaching, compliance with laws and rules governing pharmacy practice, compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, suggesting, writing, and updating polices, investigating incident reports, and monitoring departmental maintenance.  The Staff Pharmacist exemplifies through values, beliefs and practices, a Customer Service Care philosophy toward patients, visitors/families, physicians, department-to-department and staff-to-staff and demonstrates in verbal interactions and nonverbal behavior, compassion, respect and an understanding of human worth, dignity and spirit.  Assists with Performance Improvement, Drug Utilization Evaluation, Medication incident reporting and follow up.  Helps maintain adequate but minimal inventory.  Provides input for the peer review of employees.  Handles special problems that arise primarily relating to medication dispensing and administration.

Evaluates appropriateness of medication orders taking into consideration available clinical information.
 Maintains controlled drug records as required by law, rules, and procedure.  Provides input for the quarterly Drug Information Bulletin as requested.  Assesses and interprets age specific data to provide care to neonatal, infant, children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients within the scope of pharmacy services. Assists or coordinates departmental computer development.  Assists in the interviewing process for professional and supportive personnel.  Helps maintain accurate pricing of pharmacy goods and services.  Performs assessments for patients and nutritional assessments for high-risk patients and documents appropriately.  Considers patient safety and treatment above all other concerns.  Assists with discharge planning regarding medication dosage, form, compliance, nutrition and patient teaching when requested.  JOB RELATED EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS/MACHINERY/TOOLS WHICH MAY BE USED: Glovebox Isolator Hoods; Prepackaging Machine; Personal Computer; Hospital Computer System.  Must observe professional ethics in maintaining confidential information acquired regarding personal, financial, medical or employment of patients, families, and employees of AHPC.  Must follow and enforce accepted safety practices for patients and AHPC.  Must report hazards and initiate appropriate action.  Must participate in safety instructional programs.  The above statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the essential functions of this position as identified, and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.
