Job Description

The transporter is a trained individual who is responsible for providing interdepartmental transportation for patients and obtains equipment/supplies as needed for nursing departments.

Transports patients to and from their inpatient beds and other areas. Other responsibilities include retrieving medical records, lab results, supplies and medications. 

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Current CPR certification required.

Responds to overhead codes and alerts promptly.

Identifies patients using two patient identifiers. (Name, DOB)

Utilizes the Hand-Off Communication Form, logging information that is essential for transporting a patient to an ancillary department to enhance continuity of patient care. 

Utilizes proper body mechanics when transferring patients to/from stretcher/wheel chair and obtains help as needed from nursing staff.

Obtains needed equipment/supplies for nursing units upon request.

Obtains blood/blood products as needed for nursing units using two patient identifiers with lab personnel and handing off to nurse verbalizing the patients name.

Assures that patient is transported with Oxygen as per orders and that O2 tubing is labeled.

Makes rounds during shift to assure proper storage of equipment.

Reports defective equipment, labels it, and removes it from service to be repaired. 

Performs duties according to a Priority List established for the Transportation Department.
