Job Description

The Sterile Processing Technician collects/receives and processes and distributes instrumentation and equipment used to support surgeons and surgical teams in the main OR’s/Labor Birth/C-Section OR Rooms and other departments as required. Performs decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly packaging and sterilization of instruments, equipment and supplies in the Sterile Processing Department. Provides support with special instruments and reprocessing required for scheduled cases.

Performs decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly packaging and sterilization of instruments, equipment and supplies in the Sterile Processing Department. Provides support with special instruments and reprocessing required for scheduled cases.

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques, sterilization techniques and infection control requirements preferred.
  • Certification in Sterile Processing required within the first 6 months

Operates all sterilization and cleaning equipment in the SPD department.

Sterilizes instruments, equipment, utensils, linen and supplies appropriately using steam, plasma or paracetic acid.

Loads & operates autoclaves appropriately.

Places biological in the first load of the day in each sterilizer, incubate and read results. Documents BI results in appropriate logbook.

Documents accurately and correctly documents instruments / items placed in the sterilizer, incubates and records results.

Cleans sterilizer’s per routine basis. Checks sterilizer readouts after each sterilization cycle to assure that sterilization for terminal sterilization in the appropriate logbooks. Attaches sterilizer readout to appropriate paper in the logbook.

 

Notifies necessary personnel of any instrument malfunction and positive BI.  Institutes recall procedure and takes sterilizer out of service.

Is familiar with the documentation and sterilization policies and procedures regarding flexible and rigid scopes.

Decontaminates instruments after use, assures that instruments are clean and inspects for proper function prior to sterilization.

Reports any instrument malfunction to SPD Clinical Coordinator/OR Manager.

Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments.

Assemble, clean, maintain, replace and keep inventory of all instruments / trays for nursing department utilizing SPD kardex.

Assemble all departmental procedure trays, packs, and kits according to prescribed manner using appropriate count sheet or kardex as a guide; Package, wrap and handle all items following procedure; mark items with identifying data.  Sterilize and / or store in designated area.

Reports any loss of general and specialty instrumentation to SPD Clinical Coordinator.

Places wrapped OR Linen packs received from HCSC and sterilize appropriately when needed.

Performs Bi-Monthly checks in designated patient care areas regarding sterility maintenance of supplies.

Rotates items / stock assuring old supplies are use first. Routinely checks sterile instruments, trays and items package integrity to assure it is intact to ensure integrity.

Dispenses products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies; assign priority to emergency requests and issue required supplies and equipment based on knowledge of procedure.

Decontaminates patient care items such as seizure pads, respiratory care items, etc., using approved disinfectants and detergents.

Disassembles and cleans equipment such as suction machines, IV pumps, hypothermia unit, isolettes, and giraffes, etc., using approved disinfectants and detergents.  Reassemble equipment after cleaning.  Replace lost or damaged parts such as tubes, containers from stock on hand.

Takes Inoperable / broken equipment out of service, is cleaned and put in area designated for BioMed repairs. 

Checks equipment inspection date while cleaning equipment and send to BioMed for annual inspection.

Responsible to clean and maintain work area including, but not limited to, countertops, work table surfaces, decontamination rollers.

Checks adult and pediatric crash carts after use and replenish supplies.

Checks and replaces equipment on GU cart after each use.
