Job Description

Performs research activities and other tasks as necessary in a laboratory environment. Records observations and measurements and reports results. Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. Assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials, and ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. May lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Bachelor's degree in area of specialty and at least 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.

What Does a Laboratory Lead Do?  As a Laboratory Lead with Lower Keys Medical Center, you will spend your day…

  • Organizes and directs the daily activities of the laboratory section. 
  • Under the general supervision of the Lab Manager.
  • Responsible for oversight of all testing performed outside of the laboratory; adherence to protocols and policies, quality control performance and documentation, successful completion and documentation of competencies for any person performing bedside testing and timely and accurate completion of proficiency testing for any analysis resulted outside the laboratory.
  • In addition, provides education and management of safety policies and protocols in the laboratory.
  • Demonstrates an extensive working knowledge of the English language, verbal and written.
  • Demonstrates an extensive knowledge of medical laboratory technology and study methodologies including procedures, applicable regulations and equipment utilized; with an understanding of the role of the laboratory in providing excellent patient care through the delivery of accurate and timely laboratory information and a cooperative effort with the other areas of the hospital and any outreach initiatives.
  • Demonstrates a specific working knowledge of the normal growth, development, related behaviors, needs, comfort, and range of treatment appropriate to the age (including neonate, child, adolescent, aging adult) and diagnosis of patient served to support the provision of an individualized multi-disciplinary plan of care.
  • Demonstrates in-depth organizational skills in order to lead and coordinate activities of areas performing bedside testing, effectively orient, educate and develop staff, assist with short and long range planning, and assist in solving complex scheduling and personnel problems to ensure optimal development and maintenance of laboratory services.
  • Demonstrates an extensive, in-depth knowledge of interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with persons performing testing, both in lab and in the hospital.

Which Qualifications Do You Need?  In order to set you up for success, you need the basics of…

  • At least 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area, supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of an associate degree in an AMA-approved and State of Florida approved medical technology program. Four year degree preferred.
  • Must have Florida State technologist license(s) appropriate for the area of work; serology, clinical chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, microbiology. ASCP or equivalent certification required.
  • You will rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Familiarity with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures, including Microsoft Office, Excel, etc.
