This advanced internship is designed for nurses with one year plus of a strong background in bedside inpatient nursing duties. Candidates are expected to be proficient in basic medication administration, time management, and prioritizing patient care goals. Applicants with experience in progressive care/cardiovascular care / step down/ intermediate care are preferred. The critical care components will build upon the management of acutely ill patients and their pathophysiology.
The advanced internship in Critical Care is an intensive 13 week program focusing on management and care of critically ill patients. A two-part program, it is composed of an instructional portion (Essentials of Critical Care Orientation) and a simultaneous clinical portion in the Intensive Care Unit. Each candidate (participant?) will be paired with a preceptor(s) for the duration of the program. Weekly progression will cover critical disorders including their presentation, etiology, and management. Cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, neurologic, hematologic, and gastroenterological derangements are examples of topics covered. Interns will then implement the knowledge at the bedside as they practice caring for such patients with a preceptor at their side. Tasks include intravenous infusion management of critical drips, management of mechanical ventilation, and invasive bedside procedures such as line placement.
Once you complete this program, your role includes: Evaluates assigned patients and plans, implements and documents nursing care. Assists physicians during examinations and procedures. Performs various patient tests and administers medications within the scope of practice of the registered nurse. Promotes patients' independence by establishing patient care goals and teaching patients and families to understand conditions, medications, and self-care skills. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Requires an associate's degree or higher and is certified as a registered nurse. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
