Job Summary: 

The Surgical First Assistant assists surgeon, under his/her direct supervision, during the procedure with positioning of the patient, retraction, skin suturing, tying, hemostasis and other first assistant skills.  Ensures that the surgical suite is prepared according to the surgeon’s preference cards with appropriate instruments, resources and supplies.  Works collaboratively with other surgical team members to maintain/update physician preference cards.  Anticipates and responds to surgeon’s needs in a timely manner.  May perform sponge, sharps, and instrument count according to the hospital policy and procedure.  Works collaboratively to support cost containment processes and initiatives.  Will assist the surgical team to expedite room turnover efficiently and effectively.

Supervised by:  Director of Surgical Services

Education:   High School graduate, GED or 3 years relevant experience required.  Graduate from a Surgical Tech First Assist program.

Experience:  One year experience in surgery or prior on the job scrub experience required.
