Job Description

Conducts various clinical laboratory tests and procedures to obtain data and provide information for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease under the direction of the Section Leader or Medical Technologist in the assigned area.


  • Associate degree in a laboratory science, medical laboratory technology or equivalent.


  • Minimum of 6-months previous experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.
  • MLT (ASCP or equivalent) certification preferred.


1. Essential Functions:

  1. Maintains quality control records and takes appropriate action when limits are outside acceptable limits. Performs quality control procedures on a routine basis for all possible types of tests. Checks the control records for precision and accuracy to established guidelines.
  2. Processes specimens and performs testing according to written procedure. Enters data accurately, in a timely manner, and in accordance with laboratory policies. Retrieves results and information. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  3. Performs daily maintenance on laboratory equipment. Records instruments function checks and                         notifies Section Leader on abnormal instrument function results.
  4. Documents instrument maintenance and minor repairs. Documents instrument down time and                        malfunctions. Performs periodic maintenance according to the established requirements. Participates in proficiency testing surveys and assists in any investigations and/or corrections in CAP deficiencies.     

  5. Maintains a general understanding of test theory as acquired through formal education, experience and continuing education.     

  6.  Follows established safety procedures according to OSHA standards and La Porte Hospital                                   departmental policy. Maintains cleanliness of department and working area at all times.

  7.  Helps compile monthly workload statistics and quality control records in the absence of the Section Leader. 

  8.  Performs troubleshooting, and with supervision, performs advanced troubleshooting on select instruments and/or equipment.  Uses problem-solving skills when assessing test result accuracy/reliability to identify causes for unexpected test result.       

  9. Understands the impact of testing activities on billing and submission of credits.  IE cancellation or repeat testing due to hemolysis.             

  10.  Assists in training on new personnel and assists in developing student skills through clinical rotations.
