Job Description


  • Under the direction of the Dir. Biomedical Engineering, installs, inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance, incoming inspections, and modifications of medical equipment, non-medical equipment, and communications equipment in accordance with established policies and procedures, manufacturer service requirements, and regulatory codes and standards. 
  • Job responsibilities include a strong emphasis on the maintenance and support of low-risk medical equipment, medium-risk medical equipment, high-technology equipment (computer-based equipment, networking systems, etc.) and a broad range of high-risk medical equipment (i.e. anesthesia equipment, heart-lung machines, life support equipment, etc.) and high-technology equipment (i.e. computer-based equipment, networking systems, etc.). 

Minimal Acceptable Job Qualifications


  • Current drivers license; must meet present hospital insurance carrier's minimum requirements acceptable under the insurability guidelines related to driving hospital owned vehicles.


  • Minimum of 60 months of active employment as a Biomedical Equipment Technician, or equivalent.


  • Minimum of an Associates Degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology from an accredited college, or a certificate from a military biomedical training program, or a certificate from a military electronics-related training program and one or more of the following; or an Associates Degree in Electronics Technology from an accredited college and one or more of the following; 

         1)  Completion of college-level course work in basic chemistry and basic anatomy/physiology (*)

         2)   Certificate or diploma in biomedical equipment technology

         3)    CBET certification from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instruments.

  • Requires completion of advanced education programs and demonstrated competency in at least three different types of high-risk equipment and/or high technology equipment, as follows: anesthesia units, surgical lasers, autotransfusion units, ventilators, heart-lung bypass units, diagnostic imaging, diagnostic ultrasound, hemodialysis units, intra-aortic balloon pumps, cardiology management systems, clinical data systems, electronic patient recordkeeping, and computer networking.


  • None Required but Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) certification a plus.
