Job Description

CST/Surgical Technologist - PRN position in the Cardiovascular Operating Room at Lutheran Health Network - Lutheran Hospital

Must be a graduate of an accredited surgical technology program and NBSTA certified.

Heart and vascular surgery experience preferred

  • Must be willing and able to work as need - hours may include evenings, midnights, and/or weekends
  • Eligible for flat rate/PRN pay!

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and/or Supervisor and clinical leadership of a registered nurse, prepares the surgical suite and patient for surgery and assists the team during the procedure.  Performs additional functions related to cardiovascular surgery.

Education/Registration/Certification/Experience:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED)
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program or completed a surgical technology program provided by the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard or the commissioned corps of the United States Public Health Service.  Documentation of actively practicing surgical technology in a health care facility prior to July 1, 2009 will be accepted in lieu of these program requirements.  Certified surgical assistant will also be accepted.
  • If program graduation occurred on or after July 1, 2009, certification (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology is required within 12 months from graduation date.  Documentation of actively practicing surgical technology in a health care facility prior to July 1, 2009 will be accepted in lieu of certification requirements.  Certification is not required to be maintained after initial attainment.
  • If the CST certification requirement applies, individuals must attempt certification exam within 3 months of date in position and will have up to six months after hire to successfully pass certification exam or must have achieved certification within 12 months of graduation.

Certifications:

  • 15 continuing education hours related to the practice of surgical technology must be maintained annually to continue employment.  This is tracked within the department by management from documentation provided by the surg tech associate.
  • CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) is required within three (3) months of date in position and must be maintained current.

Experience:

  • One year of surgical technician experience required, which may include hours worked as a Lutheran Hospital surgical technician apprentice.
